    Many Americans were initially reluctant to pursue independence from Britain due to:

    A) Their longstanding relationship with this country - Britain had colonies in America for centuries. This was all the colonists had ever known. Before the outbreak of taxes deemed unfair by colonists, they actually had a somewhat good relationship.

    B) Britain's military strength - Many American colonists felt comfortable with the idea of being part of the British empire, as during this time they were considered one of the strongest countries in the entire world.
