Which of George Washington's beliefs best explains why he stepped down as leader of the Continental Army?

He believed family was more important than military service, and he wanted to set that example for all soldiers.

He knew the Continental Army was not performing as it should, and he stepped down and asked for a more effective leader to take his place.

He believed in democracy and a government ruled by the people. Even though this was his greatest moment, he didn't want to make himself a king.

While he was commander in chief of the Continental Army, he lost the majority of his battles, so he stepped down from the position and returned home.
