5. Choose three of the main events of the French Revolution listed below. Explain whether each event moved France closer to a representative government or further away from it and why.

(a) Representatives of the Third Estate declare themselves the National Assembly.

(b) A mob storms the Bastille.

(c) The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen is written.

(d) The National Assembly is replaced with the National Convention, which writes a constitution allowing all males to vote.

(f) A third constitution gives power to a Directory and limits voting to property-owning males.

(g) Napoleon takes power from the unpopular Directory in a coup d'état.

(h) Napoleon names himself Emperor of the French.
