Americans saw the Iran hostage crisis as an attack on America's views and the idea of diplomacy. In this scenario, the US saw the Iranian citizens as enemies, as they were repressing the rights of American citizens who happened to be working at that embassy. This resulted in President Jimmy Carter taking several actions against Iran, including ending oil imports from Iran and freezing Iranian assets in the US.

This 444 day crisis was ended with the Algiers Accords, which stated that the US would not get involved in Iranian affairs and the US government would remove the freeze on the Iranian assets.
