One of the problems with our current electoral system is:

1. long ballots make it hard for voters to be well enough informed on candidates and issues to make good decisions

2. straight party tickets keep the majority of people away from the polls

3. too many candidates "split" the ticket

4. a popular national candidate can hurt the chances of those in the same party on a local level

1, because since the line is too long many voters will get tired and eventually leave which will decrease the voting population of a given party.
