The BC movement was influential because it promoted the idea that Africans should be free and that apartheid shouldn't exist. When the students learned that Afrikaans would be a language of instruction at their schools, they protested and were supported by BC movements because Afrikaans was seen as the language of the oppressor, and they wanted only English.
