The state's secede and were a big part of the civil war along with the fact that there was slavery and they had many great advancements

Mount rushmore and alot of natinal monueements attracted tourists + life in the south was typiccaly cheap so unwealthy familys could go to vacation there and live alot better and have alot more fun then if they were in an expensive rich city like los angelas
