Why did the New England colonies develop the whaling, timber harvesting, and shipbuilding industries?

One major reason why the New England colonies developed the whaling, timber harvesting, and shipbuilding industries was because there were many accessible ports (unlike in the South). Another reason was because the climate was far less conducive to farming.
