The events that lead Great Britain and United States towards war in 1812 is the capturing and seizing of U. S. ships that were trading with France. During that period of time, Great Britain was fighting a war against France known as the Napoleonic Wars, named after the Emperor of France at that time, Napoleon Bonaparte. The United States, however, wants to stay neutral and trade with both nations since it doesn't want to be involved in world conflict (from George Washington Farewell Address). So, to force the United States to side on either nations, they tried to seize ships and cause diplomatic problems like the XYZ Affair. The United States eventually declare war on Britain after Britain decides to continue seizing ships despite U. S. negotiations and the U. S. attacked Canada because they thought Canadians will like to be free from British rule.
