Though the Seleucid empire (312 BC to 63 BC) had a policy of ethnic harmony and accomplished spreading Greek culture and ideas throughout its realm, the Jews resisted changing their beliefs. In spite of their tolerance of other religions, the Greeks outlawed Judaism which caused a revolt by the Jewish territories of the Seleucid empire. They were eventually successful in gaining independence.
