After Lexington and Concord, the colonists got together in the Second Continental Congress to talk about what they're going to do about Britain. They were super scared, so they created the Olive Branch Petition, a petition to be sent to the king to ask for forgiveness basically. King George says no, and that is when the Declaration of Independence is signed, when they realized that peace was not going to be an option.
