Many Americans look at it this way because liberty is cherished freedom by many. The exact definition of liberty is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by people on you. People may believe that because they have the freedom of public liberty that means they can impose their thoughts and beliefs on others and push them to think the same way, and it's this thinking that can endanger your private liberty.
