Jim crow was not a real person but it was a phrase "Jim Crow" has often been attributed to "Jump Jim Crow ", a song-and-dance c aricature of blacks performed by white actor Thomas D. Rice in b lackface, which first surfaced in 1832 and was used to satirize A ndrew Jackson 's populist policies
