During the English Civil Wars, Thomas Hobbes wrote the Leviathan where he argued that a social contract and social contrast is necessary. He describes human nature where he notes that in a "State of Nature" humans have the tendency to act selfishly and can be destructive if left without a governing body. Hobbes' view of humanity without government is a "war of all against all", which he also strongly warned his readers against.
