King James II of England and Ireland (James VII of Scotland) was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution in 1688. He was the last Roman Catholic ruler of England, Ireland and Scotland. He fled to France where he was granted asylum by his cousin and ally, Louis XIV. He was allowed to live in the Chateau Saint-Germain-en-Laye during his final exile.
