To begin, the Crusades were religious wars againstthe Muslims in Jerusalem to reclaim the Holy Land thatbegan in 1095. Based on evidence in documents, theCrusades were caused primarily by religious devotionrather than by the desire for political and economic gain. In document 1, Pope Urban II states that Christians inthe west should defend their fellow brethren in the east. Since Pope Urban II is a pope, he is the religious leader ofhis followers which therefore means that everyone isgoing to listen to him and are going to follow him. PopeUrban II was telling his subjects that if you fought for theland that they stood on, they would continue being goodChristians. Furthermore, if you died during ±ghting, youwould automatically be forgiven for all your sins. With thisas a reward, the subjects of course all went and did what the Pope was demanding to be done
