Why were north american geologists so resistant to wegener's idea of continental drift?

The North American geologists were so resistant to Alfred Wegener's theory or idea of the Continental Drift because they thought his theory merely made literature difficult and confused the mind of students. Wegener's Continental Drift Theory proposed that the continents all joined together drifted apart over time.
