Prior to the Industrial Revolution, machines were not often used in factories and in agriculture, therefore, people were self-sustaining. Also they did not have quick resources around them, adding to the reason for their self-sustainment. However, as machinery advanced, factories produced clothing easier and farming took less labor and time; therefore, people today do not need to be self-sustaining due to advance technology in manufacturing and agriculture. (opinion about progress can differ)
