How were African Americans viewed after the Emancipation Proclamation?

The enslaved African Americans were considered property and not citizens.

    "African Americans were considered second class citizens" would be the best option, since although they were technically free in the eyes of the law, there was still a great deal of racism in the country that inhibited them from finding jobs.
