USA relation with the soviet union during the reigns of Brezhnev and his predecessor Khrushchev were marked by periodic times. in Khrushchev, there were several tensions despite his attempt to pursue detente. tensions were on Cuban crisis, Suez canal, and in the Korean peninsula.

The detente however was actualized during the days of his successor Brezhnev. The detente however broke down when the soviet union attacked Afghanistan in 1979.
