    A literacy test was a test to prove that you are educated.

    Explanation:

    It prevented African Americans from voting because they were uneducated and black schools weren't sufficient for them to learn much, so it didn't allow them to vote just because they were illiterate.

    The word literacy itself means the ability to read, so a literacy test is basically just like a test you would get in your English test the problem is however these test would be rigged, they would be written to the standards of a white mans education, when black people would not receive the same level of education.
