Let's take these questions one step at a time.

    1) 3^2 + 2^3

    3^2 is the same as saying 3 * 3

    3 * 3 = 9

    2^3 is the same as saying 2 * 2 * 2

    2 * 2 = 4 * 2 = 8

    Now, let's add them together: 9 + 8 = 17

    2) 2^4 - 3^2

    2^4 is the same as saying 2 * 2 * 2 * 2

    2 * 2 = 4 * 2 = 8 * 2 = 16

    3^2 is the same as saying 3 * 3

    3 * 3 = 9

    Now, let's solve the problem.

    16 - 9 = 7

    And there you go!
