    We have two equation with two unknowns. Therefore, we can solve the x and y easily. There are a number of methods to apply here but I will be using substitution method. We do as follows:

    -2x + y = 1

    y = 1 + 2x

    4x + y = - 1

    4x + 1 + 2x = - 1

    6x = - 1 - 1

    6x = - 2

    x = - 1/3

    y = 1 + 2 (-1/3)

    y = 1/3
