To add 1/2 and 1/4 you need a common denominator. The common denominator is 4. Multiply 1/2 * 2/2 and you get 2/4
Now you have 6 2/4 + 2 1/4
6+2=8 and 2/4+1/4=3/4
Your answer is 8 3/4 or 8.75
