First you want to combine your like terms. Let's start with the left side.
You have 6b and - 2b. Since 6-2 is 4, you have 4bs on the left side. You also have a - 14 and a 7. 7-14=-7, so you have - 7 on the left side, giving you 4b-7=5b+1.
Now, move all the bs to one side and all the constants to another. Let's move the bs to the right and the constants left. Subtract 4b from both sides, and you have - 7=b+1. Now subtract 1 from both sides and you have your answer, - 8=b

You can rearrange it so it looks like this:
6b-2b-14+7 = 1+5b
6b-2b = 4b
-14+7 = - 7
So ...
4b-7 = 1+5b
If you move the b's to one side, and the constants to the other ...
4b-5b=1+7
Which is equal to:
-1b=8
Therefore, b = - 8
