    -3.6 from both sides

    solving left hand side, x+3.6-3.6=x

    so,

    x+3.6-3.6=-1.7-3.6

    x=-5.2

    Faster method:

    1) Shift 3.6 to the right, across the = sign

    2) Change the sign from + to -

    x+3.6=-1.7

    step 1) x=-1.7+3.6

    step 2) x=-1.7-3.6
