Simplify by combining like terms. 2 (-4y - 9) - 5y

    Multiply out the brackets first.

    So 2 (-4y-9) - 5y becomes - 8y-18-5y [2 times - 4y and 2 times - 9]

    Then simplify - 8y-5y-18 to the answer ... - 13y-18 or - (13y+18)
