    step 2: x^2 + 4x + 4 = 6 + 4

    step 3: (x + 2) ^2 = 10

    step 4: x + 2 = + / - sqrt (10)

    step 5: x = sqrt (10) - 2, or x = - sqrt (10) - 2

so the steps are in order.
