    First, you distribute. You multiply 1/3 by 3x and by 12 so you have:

    3/3x+12/3

    Then, you simplify:

    x+4

    If you need to solve for x, then the problem would be:

    1/3 (3x+12) = 0

    And of course, I've already shown how to distribute and simplify so you'd have:

    x+4=0

    Subtract 4 from both sides to get x alone and make sure the equation is even:

    x=-4
