For a singing contest in which 42,000 votes were cast, the winner received 3/5 of the votes. How many votes did the winner not receive?

    There are two ways:

    1. (42,000 * 3) / 5 =

    126000/5 =

    25200

    2. 42000/5 =

    8400*3 =

    25200

    Now subtract 25200 from original

    42000 - 25200 = 16800

    16800 votes were not for the winner
