    (3x - 5) - (5x + 1)

    Distribute the negative:

    (3x - 5) - 5x - 1

That ^ is the same thing as:

    3x - 5 - 5x - 1

Rewrite with like terms next to each other (optional)

    3x - 5x - 5 - 1

    Solve:

    -2x - 6
