In solving 2x - 5 = 3, do you have to use the addition property of equality first? Why or why not? Why do you normally use the addition property of equality first?

    You should add 5 on both sides to cancel the - 5 on bith sides

    No; you can use the multiplication property of equality first, multiplying through by 1/2, but you have to distribute. Using the addition property first means you don't have to distribute, which sometimes means that using the addition property is easier.
