Viola drives 170 m up a hill that makes an angle of 6° with the horizontal. Rounded to the nearest tenth of a meter, what horizontal distance has she covered?

    Viola is travelling on an inclined path up the hill which makes an angle of 6 degrees with the horizontal.

    The horizontal distance covered by Viola will be equal to the horizontal component of the 170 m distance covered at 6 degrees.

    So, the horizontal distance covered by Viola = 170 cos (6) = 169.1 m

    Thus, Viola covered 169.1 m horizontal distance

    Cos (theta) = adjacent/hypothenuse

    adjacent = horizontal distance

    adjacent = costheta*hy[pthenuse = cos (6) * 170 = 169.07m
