997=1000-3

so we can use distributive property

remember, a (b+c) = ab+ac

for the first one

8 (997) = (10-2) (997) = 997 (10-2) = 997 (10) + 997 (-2) = 9970-1994=7976

8 (997) = 8 (1000-3) = 8 (1000) + 8 (-3) = 8000-24=7976
