    X² - 6x + 8 = (x + 4) (x + 2) x² - 6x + 8 = (x + 4) (x + 2)

    x² - 6x + 8 = x² + 2x + 4x + 8 x² - 4x - 2x + 8 = (x + 4) (x + 2)

    x² - 6x + 8 = x² + 6x + 8 (x - 4) (x - 2) = (x + 4) (x + 2)

    +6x + 6x

    x² + 8 = x² + 12x + 8

It would be (x-4) (x-2) because 4+2 doesn't equal - 6. You need 2 numbers that would add up to the b value. Also two numbers that you could multiply that would equal 8. We see that - 4+-2=-6 and 4 (2) = 8
