Say that the cost of their food was x. So the total cost was x+.15x=300

and then you solve for x

1.15x=300

x=260.87

But that was their meal without tax. To find the tax just multiply the meal's cost by. 15. And that gives you

260.87*.15 = 39.13

So the amount of tax they paid was $39.13.
