    If you're subtracting to add, you must subtract a negative number to be able to solve for x. So 8 - (-6+3) = 11. x = - 6.

    First multiply - 1 by everything in the parenthesis, so it would be

    8 - x - 3 = 11

    combine like terms (8 and - 3)

    5 - x = 11

    subtract 5 from both sides

    -x = 11-5

    -x = 6

    divide both sides by - 1 and you get

    x = - 6
