You have to divide the value of s by 8 to get - 5
s = - 40
-40/8 = - 5

S/8 = - 5
Multiply 8 to both sides
s = - 40
Edit:
You multiply 8 to both sides to cancel the 8 in s/8.
s/8 * 8/1 = s8/8 = s
