b. the system will function if either a or b functions. the probability that a functions is 0.92, the probability that b is 0.93, while the probability that both function is 0.90. are the two components independent? what is the probability that the system functions?

The system does not function when both do not.

The probability that both (i. e. system) do not function is

    P (Failure) = (1-0.92) (1-0.93) = 0.0056

Therefore the probability that the system functions

    P (success) = 1-P (failure) = 1-0.0056 = 0.9944
