I'm having troubles answering 5 + (3x-1) = 55

First, since there is nothing in front of the parentheses except a plus sign, you can remove them.
5 + 3x - 1 = 55
Now, combine like terms.
4 + 3x = 55
Subtract the 4.
3x = 51
Now, divide by 3.
x = 17
