The first equation can be rewritten as 2x - y = - 6. I will then substitute the second equation in where the y-variable is. This give you the equation:
2x - (x - 1) = - 6.
Distribute the negative to both terms in the parentheses.
2x - x + 1 = - 6
Combine like terms
x + 1 = - 6
Subtract 1 from both sides
x = - 7
Now plug in - 7 where x goes.
y = - 7 - 1
y = - 8
Your solution is ( - 7, - 8)
