    example:

    2 1/4 + 3 1/2

    you can either turn them to improper fractions, find the common denominator, and then add them and then convert that answer to a mixed number

    2 1/4 + 3 1/2 = 9/4 + 7/2 = 9/4 + 14/4 = 23/4 = 5 3/4

    OR

    separate them ... add the whole numbers, then the fractions

    2 1/4 + 3 1/2 ... 2 + 3 = 5 ... 1/4 + 1/2 = 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 ... now put them back together and u get : 5 3/4
