    i) (a + b) ^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2

    = (x + y) ^2 + 2 (x + y) (x - y) + (x - y) ^2

    = x^2 + 2xy + y^2 + 2 (x^2 - y^2) + x^2 - 2xy + y^2

    = x^2 + 2x^2 + x^2 + y^2 - 2y^2 + y^2 + 2xy - 2xy

    = 4x^2.

    ii) (a - b) ^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab

    = (x + y) ^2 + (x - y) ^2 - 2 - 2 (x^2 - y^2)

    = x^2 + 2xy + y^2 + x^2 - 2xy + y^2 - 2x^2 + 2y^2

    = x^2 + x^2 - 2x^2 + y^2 + y^2 + 2y^2 + 2xy - 2xy

    = 4y^2.
