    The 1 infront of the parentheses multiples whatever is inside the parentheses. So it simplifies to 4x + 8 + 3x = 36

    (the 8 used to be negative)

    then you combine the x's:

    7x + 8 = 36

    then you do the opposite on the other side:

    7x = 36 - 8

    then it becomes simplified:

    7x = 28

    then you divide:

    28/7

    x = 4
