X=4. divide both sides by - 1 to get 8=x+4, then subtract 4 from both sides.

because to get rid of the 4 you have to cancel it out w / the opposite # on both sides meaning 4 - 4 = 0 while - 8 - 4 = 4 and since there's a negitive sign you hav - x which means you have to divide it by - 1 on both sides which gives you 4
