x+4y=-6
-4y to both sides
x=-6-4y
2x-5y=1
add 5y to both sides
2x=1+5y
divide both sides by 2
x=1/2+5/2y
set equal to each other
-6-4y=1/2+5/2y
add 6 to both sides
-4y=6 1/2+5/2y
subtract 5/2y from both sides
-13/2y=6 1/2
divide by - 13/2 on both sides
y = - 1
plug that into original equation
x+4 (-1) = -6
x-4=-6
add 4 to both sides
x=-2
