    Suppose the number of candy bars purchased is x

    The questions say he bought A magazine, means one magazine

    the equation is

    3x+6=30

    3x = 30-6

    3x = 24

    x = 8

    8 candy bars.

    Since he only bought 1, magazine, you can subtract 6 dollars from 30 to get 24 dollars. Now, to get the amount of candy bars he bought, you divide 24 by 3 (the amount of dollars for each candy bar) to get an answer of 8 candy bars.
