The length of a rectangle is the sum of the width and 3. The area of the rectangle is 54 units. What is the width, in units, of the rectangle?

    let width=x

    length=x+3

    x (x+3) = 54

    x²+3x-54=0

    x²+9x-6x-54=0

    x (x+9) - 6 (x+9) = 0

    (x+9) (x-6) = 0

    x=-9,6

    x=-9 (rejected)

    as width can't be negative.

    hence width=6 units
