Solve for x in the equation x^2 + 2x + 1 = 17.

x=-11 square root 15

X=-11 square root 17

x=-2+2/5

x=-1 + square root 13

    first, subtract 17 on both sides: x²+2x-16=0

    this cannot be factored, so use the quadratic formula to solve for x:

    b²-4ac=2²-4 (10 (-16) = 4+64=68

    √68=2√17

    so x = (-2+2√17) / 2 or x = (-2-2√17) / 2

    x=-1+√17 or x=-1-√17
