    Step-by-step explanation:

    x = first car, y = second car

    40x + 25y = 1475

    x + y = 50 ... x = 50 - y

    40 (50 - y) + 25y = 1475

    2000 - 40y + 25y = 1475

    -40y + 25y = 1475 - 2000

    -15y = - 525

    y = - 525 / - 15

    y = 35 gallons <== = second car

    x + y = 50

    x + 35 = 50

    x = 50 - 35

    x = 15 gallons <= = first car
